Aberdeen production company Scene 11 are launching a programme giving young North East playwrights the chance of a lifetime.
|
|
|
|
’Smart Play’ will be the company’s annual theatre production initiative. It will allow any person between the ages of 16 and 18, staying within the North East region, to enter his or her own play into the competition. The winner will have their work produced by Scene 11 and taken on tour around Scotland. They will also win £200 for their school, £200 for the charity of their choice and their own, brand new lap top computer loaded with Final Draft script writing software.

“Our goal is to have two or three projects every year purely for talented people in the North East. There will be no drawn out entry forms to fill in, no red tape, no constant monitoring. Entrants simply follow the guidelines and then do their own thing. Too many organisations, in my opinion, stifle talent with form filling and meetings about meetings. This competition lets playwrights write. No more. No less.” said David Sheret, creator of Scene 11. “Scene 11 have already shown with our short film projects that there are a number of people in this area with real, creative talent. Now, we want to give theatre enthusiasts the same opportunity."

Professional actors Peter Ballantyne, Phoebe Jones and Richard Jack will play the characters in the play and the company will appoint a director once the competition has closed and the winning play has been chosen. The tour will include 10 different towns throughout Scotland with a mixture of small intimate venues and popular big city theatres on the schedule. The competition starts on July 1st and closes on July 15th.
